RIVERTON MEMORIAL ARENA

Check it out: Riverton's barn built in 1946. After the war, the federal government was handing out money to towns to build new legions. Riverton already had a legion, so they used their share of the money to buy materials for an indoor arena...the work was done by volunteers from the town. High school students were let out of school in the afternoons to work on the building. I spoke with a man who's father was one of those students...it was the first indoor rink for miles around, everybody thought it was quite a luxury to play inside....for the record though, it's just as cold inside as it is out lol.

I remember being a kid goin to my first Bomber game and visiting the "TROUGH"....2 men spoke beside me: "a lot of Beer goin down the trough today eh?"...to which the other retorts: "you mean a lot of RYE hahaha". I was terrified. The other thing that was so striking to a 4 or 5 yr old was the massive yellow criss-cross construction beams....the place seemed huge and awesome....I was workin doin football action pics a couple of weeks ago and took these pics and a moment to reflect....can't wait for the new one...

The Barn in Selkirk.....built in the 40's to house and show cattle....converted to a hockey rink in the 1960's....some highlights are the door-less toilets in the men's wash room and the underground dressing rooms folks refer to as the "catacombs". As well, it boasts the reputation as one of the coldest rinks in the province...I spend a lot of time in this fabulous building during team photo season....

SOMEONE'S BROKEN DREAM

The last couple of years I've fished up north on Edmund Lake. It's a fly in and we stay on an island occupied by a fishing lodge that went bankrupt several years ago. It's strange to walk around the lodge because it's as if they just walked away from the place in the middle of the day...up and left. Everything was just abandoned. Boats, motors, truck trailers, a generator the size of a bus, a semi trailer size walk in freezer....hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment...12 cottages! The amount of money and amount of work required to build a place so isolated, reachable by winter road or float plane only, is staggering. And to just have to walk away?! I walked around soaking in the atmosphere takin' some photos, and could just imagine the married couple who owned the place, facing their failed dream business as they probably stepped aboard a float plane and saw the place for the last time.....
